COUNTY COUNCIL TAX
July 3, 2006
Dear Fellow MSC Swim Clubbers:
YOUR SWIM CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP
Under current Maryland law, Home Owner Association pools (like Fallsmead) are exempt from property taxes while non-profit community swim clubs (like us) must pay. These property taxes represent approximately 10% of our annual operating expenses. Considering the rapid increase in our pool operating costs, relief from this burden would have a very positive impact on our bottom line.
Montgomery County Council Members Howard Denis and Steve Silverman have agreed to introduce tax relief legislation to the Montgomery County Council as an "Expedited Bill", which will move quickly through the legislative process. The bill is scheduled for introduction on June 27, and a full Council public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at 1:30 PM.
The Swim Clubs in Montgomery County, including MSCSC need you to show your support of this legislation to your County Council representatives. Four members of the Council represent you as At Large Council Members and a fifth represents the District where you live. They all need to hear from you that you want them to support this legislation.
THIS IS HOW YOU CAN HELP.
Write, call, or e-mail your County Council Members, and give them this message:
"The non-profit community swim clubs in Montgomery County are a vital part of the quality of the community, and Council Bill 33-06 will provide property tax relief that is vital to their ability to continue to provide recreational outlets for their communities. As your constituents and voters in your district, we urge you to support CB 33-06".
You can copy this message, or use your own choice of words. Either way, let them hear from you. YOUR VOICE DOES COUNT.
Most of the members of the MSC Swim Club live in District 1 and are represented by Council Member Howard Denis, as well as the four At Large Council Members. While these members are the most critical, it is helpful to contact all council members.
A COUPLE OF IMPORTANT POINTS:
- Include the names of all voters in your household, either by including them on the same message, or by sending separate messages.
- Be sure to include your complete mailing address, and, if you prefer, your telephone number. Messages that do not clearly identify the sender do not carry as much weight.
Thank you very much for helping. Please try to make contact with the Council Members prior to the public hearing on July 11.
